| Old amalgam (silver) fillings often have recurrent caries (decay) under them and large amalgam fillings contribute to tooth fractures. Smaller fillings can be replaced with bonded composite (white) fillings that can actually strengthen the remaining tooth structure. Larger fillings (which often are accompanied by cracks in the teeth) require crowns or onlays to strengthen the tooth and help preserve it from further fractures. Back to the Gallery Index. | |
