Dental Technology
At Smiles for Centreville Dentistry, we have the latest in high technology tools and procedures, speeding diagnosis, reducing pain and minimizing x-ray exposure. Here is an explanation of some of the modern dental technologies you may see.
Diagnodent
- Diagnodent is a laser caries detector.
- Permits use of minimally invasive treatments without unnecessary preparation.
- For the first time, allows the quantification of caries activity over time with a precise and reliable measurement.
- Extremely accurate diagnostic aid. Proven to be over 90% accurate.
- Early detection of pathological changes that are undiagnosed by conventional examination methods (e.g. initial lesions, demineralization and changes in the enamel, fissure caries).
- No scratching probe; simple, fast and painless examination.
- No x-ray exposure.
CEREC
CEREC is a Cad/Cam restoration milling machine. With our CEREC machine we can produce beautiful, conservative restoration in just one visit.
CEREC is an acronym for –
- Chairside: The technology is in the dental operatory and used while you are in the chair
- Economical: The procedure is economical for both dentist and patient
- Restorations: The procedure restores your tooth to its natural beauty, function, and strength
- of Esthetic: The restorations are metal-free and tooth-colored
- Ceramic: High-strength ceramics are used that are close in composition to your natural tooth structure.
Waterlase-MD
Waterlase-MD uses a laser to excite water molecules, causing “microburst” of water droplets. It is the energized water that actually does the cutting of tooth or gum, not a drill or scalpel. Waterlase-MD can be used to perform a number of procedures on tooth, gums or bone with little or no need for anesthesia, and quicker healing. For procedures on teeth or soft tissue, like biopsies, or gum recontouring, there is usually little or no bleeding and usually topical anesthesia is all that is required.
Digital Radiographs
- There is a 90 percent reduction in the amount of radiation needed.
- There is greater ease in storing each radiographic document in a permanent condition over the years, giving the dentist the ability to compare a sequence of the patient condition.
- Making digital radiographs takes less time and has instant review capability by the doctor and the patient.
- It is possible to use computer enhancement to better utilize the digital information for diagnosis.
- No caustic chemicals are used to develop the x-rays.
Velscope
Velscope stands for Visually Enhanced Light Scope.
- The latest technology in detecting oral mucosal abnormalities and oral cancer.
- This is the first new technique in detecting oral cancer in over 25 years.
I/O Camera (Intra Oral Camera)
- Gives the Doctor the ability to take close up photographs inside the mouth to show the patient what the doctor can see.
Digital Photography
- Photographs can be digitally altered to show us what we can expect “after” the cosmetic dental work is completed before ever beginning any actual treatment
