Wisdom Teeth – Do They Need to Come Out?

Wisdom teeth have gotten a bad rap, and it’s true that they can cause problems. But does everyone need to have them removed?

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

The four permanent molars at the back corners of your mouth, top and bottom, are known as your wisdom teeth. They usually come in sometime between the ages of 17 and 21, and they get their name because they come in at a more mature age than other adult teeth.

Anthropologists believe that these teeth helped ancient people chew hard or rough foods. However, with the advancement of cooking techniques and diet changes, we don’t really need our wisdom teeth anymore.

Potential problems with wisdom teeth

There are a number of potential problems that can arise with the arrival of wisdom teeth, possibly resulting in their removal.

Tight quarters = pain

The arrival of wisdom teeth is often painful, especially in people with smaller jaws. Most people have 32 teeth, and the arrival of four more can make a tight space even more crowded.

Misalignment of adult teeth

The arrival of wisdom teeth can also cause other adult teeth to be pushed out of alignment. For this reason, dentists often recommend wisdom tooth extraction for people who have had or will have braces or other orthodonture.

Gum inflammation and disease

Limited space in the jaw and the impaction of the wisdom tooth can cause gum inflammation and can allow germs and bacteria into the area. This increases the risk of gum infections and disease.

Damage to adjacent teeth

Wisdom teeth can also damage healthy teeth that they grow next to. This is due to the increased risks of developing bone loss and cavities as the wisdom teeth grow.

Should You Have Your Wisdom Teeth Out?

Dentists know that having one or more wisdom teeth extracted before they fully emerge can be very effective in reducing or eliminating the possibilities of oral complications. While we usually try to have patients keep all their teeth, there are certain factors—like those mentioned above—where the best solution is an extraction to protect the overall oral health.
