Tooth Extraction (Oral Surgery)
Occasionally, normal treatments may not be enough to protect or restore your tooth, and our dentists will recommend a tooth extraction. Tooth extraction is a type of oral surgery, and is generally performed to help protect your oral health and prepare you for further treatment. What is oral surgery?
Oral surgery includes a number of surgical treatments designed to improve the health, functionality, and appearance of your smile. The most common form of oral surgery provided at our practice is tooth extraction.
What is tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth. While our dentists strive to preserve your natural teeth when possible, certain conditions and cases may make tooth extraction the best available option for improving your dental health. Our dentists will use local anesthesia to numb the area, then carefully and gently remove the tooth. We typically recommend tooth extraction if:
- Severe periodontal disease (gum disease) has resulted in significant bone loss and the teeth have become too loose to save
- The tooth is so seriously decayed or otherwise damaged that we cannot effectively repair the tooth with a restoration like a crown, inlay, onlay, or filling
- There are too many teeth to properly fit in the mouth, resulting in overcrowding
We may also recommend extraction for the wisdom teeth, or third molars, if they are in danger of causing serious complications for the rest of your smile.
